What is your 'modus operandi' when treating athletes?
- This is a very multifaceted question (which I will answer in greater depth in the next questions). At the most fundamental level, I have. VERY strong 'scope of practice'. I will only treat an athlete when I can identify what the root cause is, and can therefore make a positive difference in a proactive and open manner.
How often do I need to see you?
- My philosophy revolves strongly around providing all the necessary/appropriate information to the athlete. In some instances it is appropriate for the athlete to see me with regularity, in a manner that is openly discussed and based on evidence-based best practice. BUT, if the athlete needs minor tweaking (technique or strength), the most powerful tool for them is for me to provide tools and an outline, but for them to manage the situation themselves. The athlete taking responsibility and not relying on me will lead to a significantly more powerful longer term solution.
Do you work in a TEAM environment?
- YES. I have worked for years in large teams (athletes, coaches, S&C, physios etc). I pride myself in clear comms and working within my scope in the team environment - ie: I'm not a Physio, so I don't try and be one.
Are you very 'hands on (soft tissue)' with an athlete?
- Not overly. I do have a qualification in soft tissue/massage, but I ONLY use it as a tool when Im trying to change an athlete's movement patterns. The evidence around stretching for an athlete is ambiguous, so I prefer to work more in using exercise prescription to create length and balance as this is more of a longer term solution.
- If I feel as though the athlete does need more significant hands on treatment, then I will refer to the Physio etc for that.
How do you work within an Athlete/Coach environment?
- I get referrals from coaches all the time. Firstly, I am there for the athlete and will always offer 100% clarity as far as my opinions are concerned. But having worked in this environment for 2 decades now, I appreciate the delicacy around how the comms are delivered and so work closely with the coach to deliver the best results for the athlete.
I have a teenage child that I'd like you to see/treat. Am I able to watch?
- YES! In fact I strongly encourage this. The more the child and you, as the parent, understand of the situation, the more significant the outcome for all. Also, since it is a private practice, I prefer to have the parent involved to ensure the child is comfortable in my working environment. However, I will add, as the parent I ask you NOT to be too involved with the assessments. I will always ask your opinion where necessary, but I learn more from engaging with the child.
